In depth

Minor electrical fixes, done safely

Sockets and switches that have seen better days, a light fitting to swap, a dimmer that buzzes, a fuse that keeps blowing or a smoke alarm to fit — these are the electrical jobs that don't need a full electrician's call-out, but they do need doing properly. We take on minor electrical work as a competent handyperson, safely isolated, correctly wired and tested before we leave.

Every job starts with isolation at the consumer unit and ends with a test: the switch operates, the light works, the alarm sounds, the fitting is earthed correctly and there's no heat or movement to worry about. If what we find suggests something bigger — a circuit fault, damaged cable or an older consumer unit — we'll explain it and refer the notifiable work to a certified electrician rather than leaving it half done.

We work for homeowners, tenants, landlords and letting agents across Peterborough and Cambridgeshire, and our electrical fixes are often booked at the same time as alarm installation, extractor fan fitting or a general repairs list.

Why customers choose Gleamo for this

  • Minor electrical work carried out by a competent handyperson, tested before we leave.
  • Power isolated at the consumer unit before anything is touched — every visit.
  • Correct fixings and fittings, with quality sockets, switches and light fittings available.
  • Smoke and CO alarms fitted and tested, positioned to current guidance.
  • Consumer-unit, rewiring and other notifiable work referred to a certified electrician.
  • Often combined with alarm, extractor or general repair work in a single visit.

What affects the price

  • Number of fittings — one socket swap is a short job; a floor of downlights takes considerably longer.
  • Access — high ceilings, loft spaces and fittings behind units all add time and equipment.
  • Wall and ceiling type — solid masonry, plasterboard and lath-and-plaster need different approaches.
  • Whether wiring needs altering — extending a circuit to reach a new socket adds work.
  • The fittings themselves — standard white accessories are inexpensive; designer fittings and smart switches cost more.
  • Condition of the existing wiring, which sometimes needs making good before a fitting can be installed safely.

Optional extras

  • Additional sockets
  • Smart light install
  • Outdoor lighting
  • Full electrical referral
