In depth

Memorial care, restored with dignity and respect

Looking after a memorial is a quiet act of care, and it deserves to be done properly. Our memorial care service gently deep cleans headstones, kerb sets and surrounds, refreshes lettering, and carries out small sympathetic repairs — using stone-safe, biodegradable products and churchyard-friendly methods, with no harsh acids and no metal tools dragged across the face of the stone.

We work with marble, granite, sandstone, slate and the softer stones common in Cambridgeshire churchyards, and we know that each one behaves differently. Algae and lichen are lifted gradually rather than scrubbed away, lettering is cleaned and re-blacked only where the original finish allows, and any re-pointing uses a mortar matched to the age and type of the memorial. Where a repair needs a stonemason or a faculty permission, we say so rather than improvising.

Every job starts with a photograph. Send us a picture of the memorial and we will come back with a free, no-obligation quote — usually within 24 hours — along with a plain explanation of what can be improved and what will always show its age. We are family-run and fully insured, we follow Diocese-approved guidance, and we cover Peterborough, Cambridge, Huntingdon, Stamford, March, Wisbech, Ely and the villages between.

Why customers choose Gleamo for this

  • Stone-safe products only — biodegradable cleaners and soft brushes, never harsh acids or wire wheels.
  • Churchyard-friendly methods that protect grass, gravel, planting and neighbouring memorials.
  • Diocese-approved guidance followed, with faculty permission flagged up front where it is needed.
  • Before and after photographs supplied as standard, so family members who cannot visit can see the result.
  • Sympathetic repairs — re-pointing, re-fixing and small stonework — matched to the memorial's age and material.
  • Family-run and fully insured, with the same people from the first photo to the finished plot.

What affects the price

  • Size and type of memorial — a single headstone takes far less time than a kerb set, plinth and surround.
  • Condition — heavy lichen, algae staining, sinking or leaning all add work before any cleaning starts.
  • Stone type — softer sandstone and marble need a slower, gentler approach than granite.
  • Lettering — re-blacking, polishing lead lettering or refreshing gilding is quoted per memorial.
  • Repairs — re-pointing joints, re-fixing kerbs and small stone repairs are priced after we see a photograph.
  • Access — plots a long walk from a car park or behind locked gates take longer to reach and set up in.

Optional extras

  • Re-pointing of joints & kerbs
  • Lead lettering re-fixing & polishing
  • Gravel, chippings & plot tidy-up
  • Bronze & brass plaque polishing
  • Annual maintenance plans
